On Monday, June 25, staff from our environmental protection department, while looking for wild animal activity within remote parts of the national park, found fresh Giant Panda scat. Although a significant amount of panda activity was spotted near the national park boundaries in 2011, this was the first time since 2006 that panda scat was found inside of the national park boundaries.

The 2006 sample was already one year old when found but this most recent sample is estimated to have been around two weeks old. This is the first time in over ten years that such a fresh sample has been found within the park.

Although the adult male panda itself was not spotted, this is a very encouraging sign to everyone interested in Giant Panda habitats. The bamboo in the national park flowered in the 1980’s and subsequently died. As experts have identified over the past few years, the bamboo in Jiuzhai Valley is now abundant enough that it again provides a perfect habitat for the Giant Panda.
