How to get to and from the park?

There are many different options to get to the park. It is possible to self-drive, to get the bus or to fly. There is a detailed list of different options of getting to Jiuzhai Valley here.

How are the roads to the park?

The road from Chengdu via Mian Yang, Jiang You, Ping Wu, Nanping is open and much of the way is a newly built highway. Road works do occur from time to time but usually road work delays are minimal. As is the case everywhere in China accidents do occasionally happen and delays can occur. Self - driving it can be done in between 8 and 10 hours.

Since the May 12th 2008 earthquake, the road via Ying Xiu and Wen Chuan to Songpan is open to private vehicles and public busses. It is not open to travel agent’s buses. This is to keep the road free due to the amount of construction vehicles in the area at the moment. Direct Chengdu - Jiuzhai Valley busses are using the road via Mian Yang, Jiang You and Ping Wu since it was repaired and re-opened in 2009. These routes can change depending on road conditions.

It is only possible to stay within the Jiuzhai Valley National Park as part of an overnight hiking tour in the Zharu Valley. See the eco-tourism section of this website for more information.

It is not possible to stay in family homes. The reason for this regulation is due to excess water usage and waste caused by large numbers of people.

Is it possible to stay in the park?

It is not possible to stay within Jiuzhai Valley National Park. This is due to excess water usage and solid waste caused by large numbers of people. In the long run it is not sustainable to open the whole of the park to over night guests.

Plans are currently underway to open Zharu Valley to eco-tourism including hiking and camping. This will be possible as part of a guided tour. Click here for further information.

What services are in the area?

There are branches of the Agricultural Bank of China and Construction Bank of China in the villages close to the park entrance.

There are also China Development Bank ATMs. All of the ATMs in the area accept international credit cards.

There are hospitals in Nanping and Chuan Zhu Si. There is a medical centre at the park entrance offering basic first aid and oxygen and there are doctor's clinics in and around the towns outside the park.

Should you require a Tibetan massage, foot massage or haircut after a days walking these are also readily available.

When to visit?

Every season presents different experiences in Jiuzhai Valley making any time of year a good time to visit. This should prepare you for your visit.

Spring in Jiuzhai Valley enjoys lovely clear skies and sunny days. The weather is changeable however and there can be rain and snow depending on the altitude. You would be very unlucky to come in spring and not experience some nice sunny days.

Summer in Jiuzhai Valley is a celebration of everything green! All the mountains that had dried up over the winter have returned to full life. Summer is when Jiuzhai Valley gets most of its rain but it still enjoys plenty of hot sunny days which feel a lot hotter than the official 17ºC mean temperature that is provided.

Autumn in Jiuzhai Valley is possibly the most breathtaking time of the year. All the different trees and plants change different colours at the same time creating a circus of colour which reflect perfectly in the bright blue and green lakes.

Winter in Jiuzhai Valley is described as a “Winter Fairyland”. Although this may sound like something you would read in a child’s fairy tale book, when you see it you will agree. Many of the waterfalls are frozen still while the snow covered trees present the perfect contrast of colour against the brightly coloured lakes. Temperatures do drop to as low as -5ºC but this is the driest time of the year. The mountains are a barron looking brown colour where the conifers are not and when they are not under snow. Even though temperatures can be quite low when there are clear blue skies it can be quite warm in the sunshine.
